Kos Harbour has anchored Dodecanese maritime trade since the third century BC, when Hellenistic merchants loaded amphorae bound for Rhodes and Crete.
Today the same stone quays serve a different cargo: twin-hulled vessels that ferry visitors across cerulean channels to volcanic islands and monastery-crowned islets the ferries never reach. The harbour's eastern finger stretches toward Turkey's Bodrum peninsula, visible on clear mornings as a lavender smudge fourteen nautical miles distant.
Kos boat trips catamaran departures concentrate along the southern mole between April and October, when the meltemi winds blow steady from the northwest and the Aegean becomes a turquoise highway. The catamarans themselves—stable, twin-deck designs with trampolines slung between the hulls—draw less than two metres, shallow enough to anchor in Pserimos's sandy bay and off Kalymnos's limestone cliffs. Most routes follow a triangular course: northwest to Kalymnos, where sponge-divers once worked depths of sixty metres without apparatus; south to Pserimos, a roadless speck whose permanent population hovers near twenty; then northeast to Nisyros or Plati, depending on swell and schedule. The round voyage covers thirty to forty nautical miles, completed between breakfast and early evening.
Kalymnos rises in vertical strata—grey dolomite, ochre marl, white tufa—its western coast notched with sea caves that echo with gull cries. Pserimos offers the opposite: a crescent beach of coarse sand, two tavernas, and water so clear you count pebbles at three metres. The catamarans moor stern-to or drop anchor in five metres, lowering swim ladders while lunch grills on deck. Island-hopping tours from Kos allow two to three hours ashore per stop, enough to hike Kalymnos's Byzantine trail or drift-snorkel Pserimos's eastern shallows, where damselfish flit among posidonia beds.
Captains adjust routes for wind and charter: some itineraries substitute volcanic Nisyros, whose caldera vents steam year-round, for the calmer bays of Plati. Departures cluster at 08:00, when the harbour is a forest of masts and the morning breeze carries diesel and brine. The sailing cruises return by 18:00, threading back through the strait as the afternoon light gilds Kos Town's medieval bastions.
